weird fishes
(2019)
The oceans are key to our survival yet we know very little about the effects of man-made noise below the surface. Sound represents both a scientific tool for measuring the health of marine ecosystems and a visceral storytelling medium connecting people with ecological narratives.
'Weird Fishes' is a motion graphics visualisation of the ABC RN Off Track episode 'Sea Urchin Solo In The Coral Reef Choir,’ (Off Track 2015) which follows Dr Natalie Soars' research into sea urchin bioacoustics. This project explores how design and radio might be used to facilitate Deep Listening (Oliveros 2005), or Dadirri (MiriamRoseFoundation 2017) and spread awareness of the importance of sound to the health of our oceans.
